Tim Fountain, an out gay man and one of Britain's
most notorious playwrights, has done the most serious and damaging disservice
to gay men with the antics involved in and with his latest production
'Diary of a sex addict', currently playing at London's Royal Court Theatre
after a transfer from the 2004 Edinburgh Fringe. As the articles below
indicate, Fountain initiates a sexual encounter with either a member
of the audience at the show, or via his website after Gaydar banned
him from misusing its dating facilities. He has now been reduced to
having sex with the unfortunate man chosen by the audience in public
in Sloane Square, outside the theatre, in the presence of the theatre's
audience and anyone else who happens to be in the area. In doing so,
Fountain reinforces the cultural image of gay men as predatory, soul-less,
desperate, unloving, sex-obsessed monstrosities and claims that all
gay men are like him and can identify with him. In the curre nt climate
of murderous homophobia, he plays into the hands of our enemies and
gives them more than enough fuel to burn us with. How can gay men claim
cultural legitimacy when our artistic and descriptive public imaging
is so distorted and hideous and when the public at large is all too
ready to believe is representative of all gay men. Fountain is clearly
Dorian Gray's portrait come to life but best left in the attic.
